Continental Drift Islands Activity Handout
LESSON OUTLINE
5min Students complete the Do Now by answering the question.
10min Teacher outlines how to play the Continental Drift game and fill out the Continental Drift Island Match handout by recording information about the evidence found at each site, marking the locations of mountains, finding the age and composition of the mountains, and recording the layers of core samples, and locations of glacial till.
15-20min Students play the game and complete the worksheet.
5min Clean up. Wrap up.

LESSON OUTLINE
5min Students complete the Do Now by describing the particles of a solid and a gas.
5min Teacher organizes students into pairs for access to technology.
10-15min Plate Tectonics StopMotion Animation. Working in pairs or groups of three, students complete animate two tectonic plates (made from Play-Doh) above the mantle (orange construction paper) and two convection currents (paper circles with arrows) underneath in the mantle.
Animation Sequence:
Title (5pics) - ‘Plate Tectonics’ with all names underneath.
Convergent w/o Subduction (20pics) - Show large mountain formation. Don’t tilt the plates have them smoosh together to make mountains.
Convergent with Subduction (20pics) - Show small mountain and trench formation. The plate on top will form a mountain as the other goes under.
Divergent (10pics) - Don’t forget to change the direction of the convection.
Turn in via schoology.
5min Review videos.
5min Clean up. Wrap up.

LESSON OUTLINE
5min Students complete the Do Now.
5min Assign students (groups of four or more) a plate boundary.
10min Cheer Practice. Students create and perform cheers that demonstrate how the plates move in convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries because of convection. And demonstrate at least one feature of that plate boundary.
10min Cheer Presentations. Students perform their convergent, divergent, or transform boundary cheers.
10min Students continue completing the handout.
5min Collect materials. Clean up. Wrap up.

LESSON OUTLINE
5min Students complete the Do Now by clearing and cleaning tables.
5min Teacher distributes materials.
20min Plate Tectonics - Cracker & Ketchup Models. Teacher demonstrates how to make a digital character and overviews the assignment. Students recreate the ‘transform’ example, add arrows, labels, and a brief description (already done). Students then model the other boundaries with crackers and ketchup making sure their digital character is in each photo. (Tip: Take all the photos first and then add the arrows, labels, and brief description.)
10min Clear tables. Wipe tables. Dry tables.
5min Wrap up.
Plate Tectonics: Earth's Features
CW: Completed Earth’s Features Diagram (p44).
DN: Take handout, outline in color, and glue in notebook (p44).

LESSON OUTLINE
5min Students complete the Do Now by coloring and gluing notebook.
15min Complete the diagram by identifying the 3 tectonic plates, convergent boundary, divergent boundary, thermal vent, trench, ocean, mantle, mountains & volcanoes, and the convection currents.
10min Video examples of volcanoes, trenches, thermal vents, and earthquakes.
5min Emergency BIG Earthquake Plan: Meeting Locations (Main locations and alternative); Numbers of Contacts (In case phone is lost, damaged, or out of power.), Siblings/Family (Who checks/picks up who?), Food/Water (How much do you have? Is it enough for two weeks? How will you heat it?); Safest Location (What’s the safest spot in each room of your home?) Medical/Etc. (What will you do if a person has medical needs like insulin?)
